The rain clouds have glowered over the game these last few weeks, and late April/early May is usually such an optimistic period for racing too.
25 April
At Epsom, in the 5f hcap, all the talk was about the unlucky run of Jamesway but let's not overlook how well TAAJUB (89) did to finish so close from stall 1. I remember liking this horse in his juvenile year, but he could never quite land a big win for me. He's now showing promise over the minimum trip (he always could travel, I thought) and may be up to winning one more decent race before the handicapper regains his hold.
At the same meeting FIRST AVENUE (79) put in some good work at the end of the 12f Great Metropolitan. On dodgy ground, apparently "eyecatching" work can be misleading, but he's surely one to watch out for on the slop over staying trips (has won over 2 miles).
King of Jazz goes today in the Victoria Cup at Ascot, but at 12/1 isn't one to be getting too excited about. There's little in the book to shed much light on his liking for soft ground, and the reason I liked his run last time was the promise of success over the shorter trip of 6f. Just a 0.5pt win bet today.
